The Immortal Gazette: The Tooth Fairy
A comfortable silence hung in the air, interrupted only by the flickering of flames and the occasional clink of a glass. Alice lounged lazily in her chair, her legs kicked up and draped over the armrest, while Loki hummed a tune, clearly in one of those playful moods that made everyone around him slightly suspicious. They were both settled in for the night, waiting for Rumplestiltskin’s inevitable tale.
Alice glanced over at Loki and smirked. “What do you think? Another magical creature? A mysterious being? Or something… unexpected?”
Loki shot her a sly grin. “Knowing Rumple, it’s probably something strange. Though, I’m not sure what could be stranger than you pretending to be innocent.”
Alice rolled her eyes. “As if you aren’t the one who’s always pretending.”
Just as the playful banter continued, the familiar figure of Rumplestiltskin appeared in the doorway, looking far too pleased with himself. He swept into the room, his eyes gleaming with mischief.
“Aha!” he said dramatically. “I see you’ve been waiting for me. Well, settle in, because tonight’s tale is one that has haunted children’s dreams for generations!”
Loki raised an eyebrow. “Children, you say? You don’t mean the Tooth Fairy, do you?”
Rumplestiltskin smirked, his grin widening. “Ah, so you’ve heard of her, then. Yes, indeed. The Tooth Fairy—a being of legend and mystery, shrouded in tales told by parents to make their children brush their teeth, even though most of the stories they tell are… questionable at best.”
Alice stifled a laugh. “Oh, please, you’re telling me this is the great story? The one we’ve all heard since we were children? Some tiny fairy sneaks into houses at night to collect teeth? So original.”
Rumplestiltskin’s eyes twinkled with amusement. “Oh, I’m not just talking about the fairy part, Alice. You see, the Tooth Fairy is more than just a harmless little sprite who swaps teeth for coins. There’s a much older, darker version of the story that few dare speak of.”
Loki smirked. “Oh, now you have my attention. I’m all ears, Rumple. Do tell.”
Rumplestiltskin settled into the chair with a flourish, leaning forward. “Long ago, the Tooth Fairy was not just a kind-hearted spirit. In ancient folklore, she was often seen as a shadowy figure, more akin to a creature who gathered teeth, not just from children, but from all ages. You see, the tooth was believed to hold power. Not just the teeth of children, but any lost tooth—decay, disease, loss—each one symbolized a piece of life, a moment passed, or a secret taken.”
Alice leaned forward, intrigued despite herself. “Wait, so you’re telling me this fairy collected teeth for… magic? Not just for coins?”
Rumplestiltskin nodded, clearly enjoying himself. “Precisely. In some cultures, the Tooth Fairy was seen as a harvester of memories and souls. Teeth, as you may know, contain traces of a person’s essence—thoughts, emotions, even a glimpse into their soul. Some say the Tooth Fairy would come for the teeth in the dead of night, not just to exchange them for trinkets, but to preserve these pieces of existence for herself.”
Loki tilted his head. “A collector of souls? Now that sounds like a more interesting version of the story. I assume she wasn’t just taking baby teeth and trading them for shiny bits of metal?”
Rumplestiltskin chuckled darkly. “Not at all, Loki. Over time, as the tale spread to the mortal world, the Tooth Fairy’s image softened. She became the sweet, innocent figure that children loved, someone who took their teeth to reward them. But in the ancient world, she was a much more terrifying figure, one who bargained in secrets and power. The tooth could grant her knowledge, and she could grant wishes—but at a price.”
Alice raised an eyebrow. “So, the Tooth Fairy was a dealer? A wish granter with strings attached?”
Rumplestiltskin’s grin grew even wider. “Exactly. You see, those who made deals with the fairy often didn’t realize they were paying for their desires with the very essence of their memories or their life force. And should anyone try to resist the exchange—well, the fairy’s wrath was as swift as it was merciless.”
Loki’s eyes glinted with amusement. “Now that sounds more like my kind of fairy tale. But you’re telling me that some ancient version of the Tooth Fairy was some dark, soul-stealing entity?”
Rumplestiltskin nodded gravely. “Indeed. And it wasn’t just children who were at risk. Those who lost their teeth, in any way, were vulnerable—often tricked by the fairy into giving up pieces of themselves. She was not just after a simple tooth; she sought the essence hidden within.”
Alice snorted, her smile playing at the edges of her lips. “Well, that certainly beats the ‘leave your tooth under the pillow and get a coin’ version of the story. But if this Tooth Fairy was so dangerous, how come we never hear of her anymore?”
Rumplestiltskin paused, his expression shifting slightly. “Ah, that is where the story takes a twist. You see, as time passed and the legends evolved, the darker aspects of the Tooth Fairy’s story faded into the shadows. The innocent version took over, and people forgot the more sinister parts. The trade for teeth, for memories, for power, was forgotten. And so she became the harmless figure we know today.”
Loki leaned back in his chair, impressed. “I never thought I’d hear a tale of the Tooth Fairy like that. Sounds like she was a rather unforgiving entity, if you ask me.”
Alice smirked. “Well, I don’t know if I believe the whole soul-stealing bit. But I’ll admit, it makes the Tooth Fairy sound a lot more interesting.”
Rumplestiltskin chuckled, leaning back in his chair. “Ah, yes. The truth behind every legend is always more complicated, isn’t it? No one ever wants to believe that the fairy tale is more dark than it seems. But, there’s always a price to pay when you deal with magic—whether it’s a wish or a tooth.”
Alice’s expression softened for a moment, and she gave Loki a teasing look. “Well, let’s just say, I’d be careful about what kind of teeth you’re offering up. You never know who’s lurking in the shadows.”
Loki raised his glass and winked. “Noted. But I’ll stick to my own deals, thanks.”
Rumplestiltskin’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Ah, yes. You would be careful with such things. Very clever, Loki.”
And as the night wore on, with the fire casting its soft glow on the room, the tale of the Tooth Fairy lingered in the air—a reminder that every legend, no matter how sweet, might hold a darker side, waiting to be uncovered.
