The Tale of Orpheus and Eurydice
A Poetic Retelling
Of Myth and Lore
Let me tell you a story, of love and loss, and a journey through the underworld
Orpheus, a minstrel with a golden lyre,
Played melodies that lifted the mire.
His love, Eurydice, the light of his heart,
Was stolen away, torn apart.
A serpent’s bite claimed her life,
And Orpheus wept, consumed by night.
Yet music’s magic stirred his soul,
And to the underworld he made his goal.
Through shadows deep and silence cold,
He sought his love, courageous and bold.
His music soared, a plea to the gods above,
Hoping to reclaim his lost love.
Hades listened, moved by the tune,
And granted a chance beneath the moon.
“Lead her out, but do not look behind,
Or all will end, as the fates have signed.”
Yet doubt crept softly into his heart,
And trust faltered, tearing them apart.
One glance too soon, and she was gone,
Back to the shadows where she belonged.
Orpheus returned to the world above,
Alone, bereft, with a void in his love.
His music carried the sorrow, the pain,
A testament to love that could not remain.
So if you hear a song in the night,
Remember the love that took its flight.
A tale of hope, of courage, of loss,
A melody eternal, its echo embossed.
