Noxarbor's Labyrinth
Deep within the World of Grimmveil, hidden beneath ancient moonlit canopies, lies a place few maps acknowledge and even fewer survivors willingly discuss.
It is called Noxarbor.
Some describe it as a forest.
Others insist it is a labyrinth.
The oldest records simply call it a place that learns who you are before deciding whether you deserve to leave.
Noxarbor appears only beneath certain moons. One night, there is nothing but an ordinary stretch of woodland. The next, impossible archways of twisted branches rise from the mist, inviting the curious to step inside.
Most who enter believe they are chasing an adventure.
Noxarbor believes otherwise.
Sarah laughed as she pushed aside the first curtain of hanging vines.
"I mean... what's the worst that could happen?"
Behind her, Ethan rolled his eyes.
"You had to say it."
"Relax," Maya grinned. "If we die, I'm haunting all of you."
"You already haunt us," Liam muttered.
The group laughed.
It would be the last genuine laugh they shared that night.
The moment the final person crossed beneath the twisted branches, the entrance vanished.
Behind them stood only trees.
Ahead...
Only more trees.
Every path looked familiar.
Every direction felt wrong.
When they turned around, the trail they had followed simply no longer existed.
Silence settled over the forest.
Even the insects had stopped singing.
"Okay..."
Sarah forced a smile.
"Nobody panic."
"I'm already panicking," Maya answered.
"Excellent. You're ahead of schedule."
No one laughed.
The deeper they wandered, the stranger the forest became.
Branches stretched like grasping fingers.
Roots moved when no one looked directly at them.
Entire sections of the forest rearranged themselves between blinks.
Moonlight refused to shine in the same place twice.
Then...
The whispers began.
Soft.
Patient.
Almost comforting.
"This way..."
"You're almost free..."
"Leave the others..."
"They've been lying to you..."
"I heard my mom."
Ethan froze.
"Guys..."
His voice trembled.
"I swear... she just called my name."
Sarah grabbed his arm.
"Don't answer."
"But what if..."
"Don't."
The voice called again.
Closer.
Kinder.
Perfect.
The first manifestation arrived without warning.
Liam rounded a bend and screamed.
Towering over the path stood a creature made entirely of cracked mirrors.
Every reflection showed a different version of him.
The failure.
The coward.
The friend everyone secretly tolerated.
The son who never measured up.
"No..."
The creature smiled with all of his own faces.
"You already believe we're real."
It lunged.
Running only made the labyrinth angrier.
Every fear they refused to face took shape.
Maya, who feared abandonment, found herself surrounded by empty versions of her friends who walked past as though she didn't exist.
Sarah's father appeared over and over, repeating every cruel word she'd spent years trying to forget.
Ethan watched spiders the size of wolves crawl from the shadows, each one wearing his own terrified expression.
Liam kept seeing everyone else's bodies lying motionless beneath the trees.
Every time he closed his eyes...
There were more.
"It's in our heads!"
Sarah shouted.
"No."
An enormous claw slammed into the ground inches from her face.
"It's definitely out here!"
The labyrinth learned.
It adapted.
The more frightened they became...
The stronger the creatures grew.
Soon it wasn't enough to show them monsters.
It turned them against one another.
"You left me!"
"I told you to wait!"
"You never listen!"
"You always think you're right!"
"I've spent years pretending to like you!"
Silence.
Everyone froze.
No one could tell anymore whether those words had come from the labyrinth...
...or from each other.
Friendships cracked.
Trust dissolved.
Old arguments resurfaced.
Jealousies they thought long buried clawed their way into the open.
One by one, they stopped seeing teammates.
They saw obstacles.
Accusations echoed beneath the trees.
People stormed away.
Others refused to apologize.
The labyrinth fed on every angry word.
The forest itself seemed to smile.
Then came the worst illusion of all.
Hope.
A warm light appeared between the trees.
Home.
Their town.
Families waiting.
Breakfast cooking.
The front doors stood open.
"You see?" Maya cried.
"We made it!"
Sarah didn't move.
"No."
"What?"
"This place doesn't give gifts."
The smiling figures standing in the doorways never blinked.
One by one...
Their smiles stretched impossibly wide.
"Happy thoughts!"
Liam shouted.
"What?"
"Happy thoughts!"
"This is your survival plan?"
"It's literally all I've got!"
"I can't think happy while being chased by nightmare trees!"
"THEN TRY HARDER!"
Something changed.
For the briefest moment...
The creatures hesitated.
Not because happiness defeated them.
Because fear no longer controlled them.
The friends stopped running.
Stopped believing every whisper.
Stopped turning against one another.
Hand in hand, exhausted and terrified, they walked forward together.
The labyrinth fought harder than ever.
Trees collapsed.
Shadows screamed.
The monsters became larger.
Closer.
Hungrier.
For one terrible moment...
It seemed none of them would survive.
Then dawn broke.
The first rays of sunlight pierced the canopy.
The whispers vanished.
The creatures dissolved into drifting mist.
The impossible paths unraveled.
The forest became nothing more than an ordinary stretch of ancient woodland.
Sarah, Ethan, Maya, and Liam stumbled into the morning light.
Alive.
Barely.
None of them ever spoke about everything they had seen.
Some wounds cannot be explained.
Some words cannot be taken back.
Not every friendship survives learning what someone truly fears...
...or what they truly think.
Even now, travelers occasionally discover strange archways woven from black branches beneath a full moon.
Most wisely turn back.
A few step through.
The Grand Archives contain dozens of accounts from those who entered Noxarbor over the centuries.
Very few have happy endings.
Some escaped without their memories.
Some emerged decades older than when they entered.
Some returned alone, refusing to explain what became of the others.
Many were never seen again.
So if, one moonlit night, the forest seems to invite you inside...
Remember this.
Noxarbor does not care how brave you believe yourself to be.
It only wants to know one thing.
When every fear you've ever buried is standing in front of you...
Who will you become?
Fair warning, mortals...
The labyrinth has been waiting far longer than you have been alive.
