The Immortal Gazette: The Wizard of Oz
A gentle breeze swept through the room, rustling the pages of the Immortal Gazette as Alice, comfortably perched on the arm of a chair, gazed at the flickering fire. Loki, ever the mysterious trickster, hummed softly to himself, spinning his coin between his fingers. Rumplestiltskin, as usual, sat with an air of quiet anticipation.
“Alright, Rumple, what have you got for us tonight?” Loki asked, grinning. “Some old fairytale, or something with a twist?”
“Oh, it's a twist alright,” Rumplestiltskin said with a sly grin. “But this one’s a bit more... colorful than most.”
Alice raised an eyebrow. “Colorful, you say? Please, do tell. I'm intrigued.”
Rumplestiltskin chuckled, leaning forward. “This tale comes from the land of Oz, a place where the line between fantasy and reality blurs like sugar in water. It all begins with a girl named Dorothy—a simple farm girl from Kansas who, one day, gets caught in a tornado.”
Loki perked up, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Ah, a tornado? Nothing says whirlwind adventure like that.”
Alice chuckled, clearly amused. “So, this tornado whisks her away to a magical land... and then what happens? Does she get a bunch of magical friends?”
Rumplestiltskin nodded. “Exactly. After the tornado lands, Dorothy finds herself in a strange, colorful world, far from home. A world that’s too perfect—but a place where everything seems to have its own agenda.”
“Let me guess,” Alice said, her voice full of mock seriousness. “She’s the chosen one or something, right?”
Rumplestiltskin smirked. “Oh, but of course. But not in the way you think. Dorothy doesn't find power right away. Instead, she meets some unusual characters: a scarecrow without a brain, a tin man without a heart, and a cowardly lion who could certainly use a little courage.”
Loki burst out laughing. “A cowardly lion? Now that’s rich. A lion afraid of its own shadow?”
Alice snickered. “Hey, I’m not judging. We all have our weaknesses.”
Rumplestiltskin continued. “Together, they decide to seek the great wizard of Oz, who is said to grant them all the things they so desperately desire. Dorothy wants to get back to Kansas, the Scarecrow wants a brain, the Tin Man wants a heart, and the Lion—well, you guessed it—wants courage.”
Loki snorted. “Everyone wants something, don’t they?”
“More like everyone needs something,” Alice added, raising her glass. “But here’s the twist, right? There’s no wizard that can actually grant them their wishes.”
Rumplestiltskin's smile deepened. “Exactly. But it’s not all what it seems. They journey through the Land of Oz, battling witches and overcoming challenges, and along the way, they discover something quite unexpected.”
“Something like... inner strength?” Alice asked sarcastically, raising an eyebrow.
“Oh, absolutely,” Rumplestiltskin said. “They each have the very qualities they desire deep within themselves. It’s the journey that opens their eyes to what they already have.”
Loki rolled his eyes dramatically. “So it’s all about the inner journey? Typical fairytale nonsense.”
Alice laughed. “Well, sometimes, Loki, we all need to be reminded of the power we already have.”
Rumplestiltskin nodded. “The Wizard—as it turns out—was just a fraud.” He leaned in closer. “He was no wizard at all. Just a man behind a curtain, pulling levers and pretending to be something he wasn’t.”
Loki smirked. “Ah, a charlatan. I love those.”
“Of course you do,” Alice quipped.
Rumplestiltskin went on, his tone darkening. “But here’s the thing—Dorothy’s greatest lesson is that she doesn’t need magic to get home. What she needs is what she’s learned along the way: the strength to find her own way home, without relying on others, and the realization that home is wherever she decides it to be.”
Loki raised an eyebrow. “Hmm. I might have liked that lesson... if it wasn’t so cheesy.”
“Don’t pretend you didn’t learn something from it, Loki,” Alice teased, smirking. “We all need to find our own way home sometimes.”
Rumplestiltskin gave them both a knowing look. “True. But the true twist of this tale is in how we’re often searching for something we already have. We just need to look within, like the Lion, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow.”
Alice raised her glass again. “Or, in your case, Rumple, maybe it’s just about finding a better magic trick.”
Rumplestiltskin grinned. “Touché, Alice. Touché.”
“But there’s one more thing about Oz,” Rumplestiltskin continued, his voice dropping slightly. “The Wizard? He’s more than just a fraud. He represents the illusion of power. People often follow those who pretend to know everything, but in the end, it’s the ones who know themselves that come out on top.”
Loki scoffed. “The illusion of power... that sounds way too familiar. But I think I’ll leave that to you, Rumple.”
Alice gave him a side-eye. “Careful, Loki. Rumple might get ideas.”
Rumplestiltskin gave a wicked grin, but before he could speak, Alice quickly added, “But don’t worry, Rumple. I think we all prefer you as the mysterious trickster—not the Wizard of Oz.”
Rumplestiltskin laughed. “Oh, don’t worry, Alice. I’m much more fun as I am. Just wait until you need a little magic.”
And with that, the night continued on, the tale of Oz spinning its endless lessons into the air, leaving behind only whispers of home and self-discovery that danced along with the wind.
