The Immortal Gazette: The Little Mermaid

The Immortal Gazette: The Little Mermaid

The Immortal Gazette was a haven for stories of all kinds, but tonight, there was a hint of salt in the air—an ocean breeze drifting in from the sea. Alice was lazily flipping through a well-worn grimoire, Loki was playing with a shimmering sea-shell necklace (don’t ask where he got it), and Rumplestiltskin was, well, rumbling.

“What's the story tonight, dear imp?” Alice asked, not looking up from her book.

Rumplestiltskin let out a sigh that could only mean one thing: he had a tale to tell.

“The Little Mermaid,” he muttered, crossing his arms. “A classic, but a tragic one.”

Alice immediately perked up. “Ooo, tragedy—now, I’m intrigued. Tell us, Rumple. Educate us, please.”

Loki, in his usual sarcastic tone, smirked. “I’m sure there’s some tortured soul in the story that we can mock endlessly.”

Rumplestiltskin shot Loki a glare. “Oh, just wait. This one’s a doozy.”

The Little Mermaid: The Tragic Tale of Sacrifice

“Alright,” Rumplestiltskin began, taking his usual position in front of the fire. “Once upon a time, there was a young mermaid named Ariel who lived beneath the sea with her father, King Triton.”

Alice interrupted, “Wait, her dad was Triton? Triton, like the god of the seas? That Triton?”

Rumplestiltskin waved his hand dismissively. “Yes, that Triton. A powerful figure, sure, but a bit of a control freak.”

Loki raised an eyebrow. “A control freak with a kingdom at his disposal. Sounds like someone I know.”

Rumplestiltskin shot Loki a look, but kept going. “So, Ariel, young and curious, was fascinated by the human world. She would collect human artifacts, trying to understand their strange customs, and all the while, her father warned her about how dangerous the human world could be.”

Alice leaned forward. “Let me guess—daddy issues?”

Rumplestiltskin snorted. “Exactly. Ariel, tired of being controlled, longs to be free. She dreams of becoming human and living among them. But here's where it gets interesting...”

Loki mocked in a sing-song voice, “A tragic deal with a sea witch?”

Rumplestiltskin narrowed his eyes. “Yes. Ursula, the sea witch, offers Ariel a deal—she can become human if she gives up her voice as payment. But—and this is important—if she doesn’t win the love of the human prince within three days, she’ll die and become part of Ursula’s collection.”

Loki leaned back, tapping a finger against his chin. “Now that’s quite the contract. And here I thought I had a way with deals.”

Alice snorted. “I mean, how could anyone not fall in love with Ariel? She’s got such a personality... oh, wait, no voice.”

Rumplestiltskin smirked. “Indeed. So Ariel, in her desperation to be human, agrees to the deal, and is transformed. She has three days to make the prince fall in love with her. But, naturally, things don’t go as planned.”

Alice raised an eyebrow. “Let me guess. Ariel doesn’t get the happy ending she expects?”

Rumplestiltskin sighed dramatically. “Oh, she does not. Despite her beauty and charm, the prince marries another woman—someone who can talk—and Ariel’s heart shatters.”

Loki grinned. “Shocking. Who would have thought that communication would matter in a relationship, huh?”

Rumplestiltskin glared at him. “Exactly. But then… Ursula gets involved, tricks Ariel, and things go from bad to worse. The mermaid has to make the ultimate sacrifice.”

Alice leaned in, intrigued. “Wait, what happens?”

Rumplestiltskin’s eyes flickered. “In the end, Ariel chooses to give her life for the prince. She doesn’t get the prince, but she gains an immortal soul.”

Loki’s smirk faltered for a moment, but then he scoffed. “Immortal soul—classic Disney, always ending on that high note.”

Rumplestiltskin gave him a knowing look. “Not so fast, Loki. Ariel did get the soul… but she doesn’t live happily ever after.” He paused for dramatic effect. “She dies and becomes a part of the sea foam. The end.”

Alice stared at him. “Wait, that’s it?”

Rumplestiltskin raised an eyebrow. “Yes, that’s it. She dies for the prince, becomes sea foam, and nothing else changes. The story is not about happiness, my dear. It’s about sacrifice, vanity, and the price of wanting something you can’t have.”

Loki clapped slowly, raising his glass in mock toast. “Well done, Rumple. A real heart-wrenching tale of unrequited love and existential despair. Very uplifting.”

Rumplestiltskin glared at him. “Oh, I’m glad you’re enjoying it.”

Alice smiled sweetly at Rumplestiltskin. “Well, it was tragic… and you’re right. It’s about sacrifice and vanity. Ariel gave up everything for a chance to live out her dream, but in the end, it was all for nothing. It’s a powerful story of the consequences of wanting something without understanding the price.”

Loki tilted his head, thinking. “And that’s the thing, isn’t it? Wanting. We always want something, and most of the time, we’re blind to the cost of it. In Ariel’s case, she didn’t even get to see what she truly wanted in the end.”

Rumplestiltskin chuckled darkly. “Exactly. Vanity. A dangerous thing. Even for a mermaid princess.”

Alice raised an eyebrow. “So, no happy endings, just like that other story you ruined?”

Rumplestiltskin’s face darkened. “Shut up about that, Alice.”

But before Alice could tease him further, Loki leaned over and draped his jacket over her shoulders, flashing her a wicked grin. “Let’s not get distracted, shall we? We’re all about the darker sides of stories tonight, aren’t we?”

Alice smirked, leaning into the warmth of the jacket. “Oh, we are.

And so, as the fire flickered and the night stretched on, the story of The Little Mermaid hung in the air like the salty sea breeze—the price of desire, vanity, and the cruel consequences of getting what you wish for.
