The first Frostwatch warrior was Jorund Frostbane, a hero who emerged from the Icefields to take his place as the first guardian of the Frostgate. Jorund, who bore a rune-marked blade, was known for his unyielding resolve. Legends say that, in the old days, when the north was still a land of ancient chaos, and the clans were divided, it was Jorund who, wielding his great war-axe, cleaved through storms and shadow-beasts to form the first watchtower that would guard the gates of the north.
Jorund's sword and axe, imbued with the runes of the gate, became the symbol of the Frostwatch Clan—their true guardianship over the north, and the ancestral oath they had sworn.
For centuries, the Frostwatch Clan has protected the Frostgate, and they are not just ordinary warriors. Long ago, the Frostwatch Clan faced an existential threat unlike any other—the Ymirian Hordes, a dark, mystical army that hailed from beyond the gates, led by Ymir the Frost King, a being of immense, frozen power, said to have been created by the god of winter, Vindskaar. Ymir sought to unleash an eternal winter that would cover all of 4EverMore, plunging it into a cold, lifeless eternity.
It was during this time that Jorund Frostbane and his elite warriors stood at the Frostgate, preparing for the oncoming storm. It is said that, on the day of battle, when Ymir and his horde descended on the gates, the mountains themselves shuddered under the weight of the advancing army. Jorund, standing tall atop the cliffs with the great rune-axe in hand, called upon the Frostwatch Magic to awaken the land itself, using the power of the Frostgate to repel the Ymirian Hordes.
As the winds howled and the snowstorm grew fierce, Jorund and his warriors fought, and the Frostgate erupted in runes of ice and fire, a blazing wall of power that shattered the Ymirian army, driving them back into the wastelands from which they came. Every clan in the east, west, and north owes them fealty, for they are the line of defense that protects all of 4EverMore’s northern realms from ancient threats and invading forces. Their warriors, each with a shield, a rune-blade, and a snowstorm-cloak, patrol the borders of the Frostgate, ensuring that none may enter without permission. They are forever tied to the land, and every new Frostwatch warrior must swear an ancient oath:
“By the snow and storm, by the land and gate, we stand. We are the shield that keeps the North safe.”
Their greatest artifact is the Winterstone, a frost-encrusted jewel that contains the heart of the Frostgate and ensures the clan’s magical bond with the land. The Winterstone is passed down through generations, with the Frostwatch leader always wearing it as a mark of their authority. It is said that, should the Winterstone ever be lost or stolen, the Frostwatch Clan will lose its connection to the land—and the Frostgate will fail.
