The Immortal Gazette: The Four Ministries of Orwells 1984

The Immortal Gazette: The Four Ministries of Orwell’s 1984

The fire burned low, casting flickering golden light across the chamber. Loki leaned back in his chair, boots propped up on the table, looking far too smug for Rumplestiltskin’s liking. Alice—still wrapped in Loki’s coat—sat beside him, sipping from a goblet of something dark and rich.

Rumple scowled. "I swear, I turn my back for one night, and suddenly, you two are inseparable."

Alice smirked. "Oh, come now, Rumple. It’s just friendly conversation."

Loki hummed. "Very friendly."

Rumple’s eyes narrowed. "Hmph. We’ll revisit that later. Right now, we have something far more disturbing to discuss—the four ministries of 1984."

Loki waved a lazy hand. "Ah, yes. The ministries where every name means the opposite of what it actually does. Orwell really had a sense of humor, didn’t he?"

Alice sat forward. "Let’s break them down one by one. We already covered The Ministry of Truth, but what about the other three?"

Rumple tapped his fingers against the table. "Brace yourselves, darlings. It only gets worse from here."

1. The Ministry of Truth (Minitrue) – Lies and Propaganda

Loki grinned. "Ah yes, the grand storytelling ministry. Only instead of spinning good tales, they rewrite reality to fit whatever Big Brother desires."

Rumple nodded. "The Ministry of Truth is responsible for propaganda, historical revisionism, and erasing inconvenient facts. Winston Smith, the novel’s protagonist, works here—rewriting the past so it aligns with The Party’s ever-changing version of reality. Wars are fabricated, people disappear without a trace, and inconvenient truths are deleted."

Alice shuddered. "And no one even questions it?"

"That’s the brilliance of Doublethink," Rumple said. "The ability to believe two contradictory ideas at once. If The Party says two plus two equals five, then so it does. If Oceania was never at war with Eurasia, then it never was."

Loki sighed dramatically. "And people think I’m the master of deception."

Rumple smirked. "You wish, Trickster."

2. The Ministry of Peace (Minipax) – War and Conflict

Alice groaned. "Oh, this one. The Ministry of Peace... which only exists to wage war."

Rumple spread his hands. "War is peace, Alice. The Party needs a constant enemy—an eternal conflict to justify oppression and control."

Loki swirled his wine. "So they manufacture wars? Keep the people in a state of constant fear?"

"Exactly," Rumple said. "Oceania is always at war, but the enemy conveniently changes every so often. One day it’s Eurasia, the next it’s Eastasia. The switch happens overnight, and the people—trained in Doublethink—simply accept it. They forget that history was ever different."

Alice frowned. "So war isn’t even about winning?"

Rumple shook his head. "No, darling. War isn’t about victory—it’s about control. It keeps the people desperate, obedient, and willing to sacrifice everything for the government that keeps them ‘safe’."

Loki chuckled darkly. "Now that is evil."

Rumple smirked. "Oh, but we’re just getting started."

3. The Ministry of Love (Miniluv) – Fear and Torture

Alice crossed her arms. "This one makes my skin crawl."

Rumple’s golden eyes gleamed. "Ah yes, Miniluv—the most feared ministry of them all. Its sole purpose? Torture, brainwashing, and absolute obedience."

Loki arched a brow. "And they call it the Ministry of Love?"

Rumple grinned. "Oh, but it is about love, dear Loki. Love for Big Brother. Love that must be absolute, unquestioning, and all-consuming."

Alice’s expression darkened. "You mean love through fear."

"Precisely," Rumple said. "No one truly loves Big Brother—not at first. But after enough time in Room 101—where your worst nightmare becomes reality—well, even the strongest minds break. Even Winston Smith."

Loki exhaled. "So the goal isn’t just to punish rebels—it’s to erase their ability to think differently."

"Exactly," Rumple said. "They don’t just kill dissenters. They reprogram them. By the time they’re released—if they are released—they’re hollow, empty, and devoted to Big Brother."

Alice looked sick. "That’s... worse than death."

Rumple nodded. "And that, my dear, is why The Ministry of Love is the most terrifying of them all."

4. The Ministry of Plenty (Miniplenty) – Starvation and Rationing

Loki leaned back. "Let me guess—this is where they keep everyone poor while pretending they’re rich?"

Rumple chuckled. "Oh, Trickster, you catch on fast. The Ministry of Plenty is responsible for rationing, economic control, and keeping the people in a perpetual state of poverty—all while claiming that prosperity is at an all-time high."

Alice shook her head. "So the people believe they’re thriving... while they’re starving?"

Rumple smirked. "Oh, it’s brilliantly cruel, really. The Party constantly announces record-breaking production numbers—more food, more clothing, more luxuries—while the actual supply gets smaller and smaller. And no one questions it because all records support the lie."

Loki scoffed. "I’m starting to see why Orwell wrote this as a warning."

Rumple nodded. "Indeed. The Ministry of Plenty ensures people are too busy struggling to survive to question their reality."

Alice exhaled. "So... every ministry exists to control people."

Rumple grinned. "Now you’re getting it, darling. 1984 isn’t just about surveillance—it’s about mental domination. The Party doesn’t just want obedience—it wants absolute submission."

The Room Fell Silent

Loki downed his drink. "Alright. That was officially the most depressing history lesson yet."

Alice pulled Loki’s coat tighter around her. "And the most terrifying."

Rumple smirked. "Oh, but Orwell was just a storyteller, my dears. This is all fiction—" His golden eyes gleamed. "—or is it?"

Alice shivered. Loki poured himself another drink. Rumple just chuckled.

Outside, the wind howled against the stone walls. Somewhere in the shadows, a whisper lingered:

Big Brother is watching.
