The Whispering Stones of Ebonveil
In the heart of Ebonveil Forest, where the trees stood ancient and gnarled, there lay a forgotten circle of stones, weathered by time and veiled in perpetual mist. Known as the Whispering Stones, this sacred site was avoided by all who valued their sanity. The villagers spoke of voices that could drive a person mad, an eerie chorus that echoed through the trees, luring the unsuspecting into a labyrinth of shadows from which none returned.
Legend has it that the stones were once part of a grand temple, a place of immense power dedicated to a deity whose name had long been erased from history. This god, they said, was one of secrets and forbidden knowledge, worshipped by an ancient cult that sought to control the mysteries of life and death. They performed rituals under the moon’s cold gaze, offering sacrifices in exchange for the deity’s dark wisdom.
But power such as this could not go unchecked. The other gods, fearing the rise of this dark force, struck down the temple, scattering its followers and binding the god within the stones. Yet, the punishment was incomplete. The deity's essence lingered, trapped but restless, whispering its rage and promises of forbidden power to anyone who dared to listen.
The stones became cursed, a beacon for the lost and the desperate. Those who ventured near were said to hear the whispers grow louder, tempting them with visions of glory, knowledge, and eternal life. But the price was always the same: their minds twisted and shattered, leaving behind empty shells of what they once were.
Some say the Whispering Stones are a portal, a gateway to a realm where the dark god waits, gathering strength. Others believe they are the god itself, fractured and spread thin, yet potent enough to ensnare souls. The villagers, however, care little for the specifics. They only know one thing: stay away from the stones, or risk losing more than just your life.
