Whispers in the Crypt
Beneath the oldest districts of Grimmveil, where the towers of the living city gave way to forgotten foundations, there was a place that even historians preferred to leave untouched.
The Veilshade Catacombs.
For centuries, the winding tunnels beneath the city had existed only as rumors in the Grand Archives. Maps showed sections that no longer appeared on modern records. Ancient texts mentioned chambers sealed before the rise of the current Houses. Scholars argued over whether the catacombs were burial grounds, forgotten sanctuaries, or something far older.
Sarah Valehart had spent most of her life searching for answers hidden in the cracks of history.
As a historian of the Grand Archives, she had uncovered lost kingdoms, translated forgotten languages, and restored records that others believed were meaningless fragments. She believed every abandoned piece of history had a reason for being forgotten.
When a damaged map was discovered inside a collection of ancient documents, Sarah recognized the markings immediately.
It was not a map of a tomb.
It was a warning.
The map revealed a sealed entrance beneath Grimmveil's oldest district, hidden for hundreds of years behind layers of stone and forgotten magic. After months of preparation, Sarah assembled a small expedition of researchers and explorers willing to enter the catacombs.
Among them was Marcus Thorn, a relic hunter who believed every legend had a treasure buried beneath it.
"There are two kinds of people who enter places like this," Marcus said as the massive stone doors opened before them. "Those who find something valuable, and those who become part of the legend."
Sarah looked into the darkness beyond the entrance.
"Then let us hope history remembers us for the first reason."
The doors closed behind them.
The first hours were exactly what Sarah expected. Ancient carvings covered the walls. Broken statues stood among collapsed corridors. Their lanterns revealed forgotten symbols belonging to civilizations that had vanished long before Grimmveil's modern Houses existed.
But the deeper they traveled, the stranger the catacombs became.
The air grew colder.
The magical markings on the walls began glowing faintly.
And then they heard the whispers.
At first, Sarah believed it was an echo.
The catacombs were vast. Sound could travel strangely through ancient tunnels.
But echoes did not say names.
"Sarah."
She stopped.
The others noticed immediately.
"What is it?" Marcus asked.
Sarah turned toward the darkness behind them.
"Someone called my name."
No one spoke.
The silence that followed felt heavier than the stone surrounding them.
Then the whisper came again.
"Sarah Valehart."
This time, everyone heard it.
The expedition continued, but the mood had changed. The whispers followed them deeper into the catacombs, never threatening, never attacking.
Only calling.
After three days, they reached a chamber that was absent from every known record.
At the center stood a black stone crypt surrounded by silver markings.
Sarah approached slowly.
Unlike the other chambers, this one contained no remains. No burial offerings. No signs of death.
Only a message carved into the stone.
"The forgotten must wait until the world is ready to remember."
Marcus frowned.
"That sounds less like a grave and more like a prison."
Sarah shook her head.
"No."
She traced the inscription carefully.
"It says wait. Not remain trapped."
Before she could translate the remaining symbols, the entire chamber trembled.
The whispers grew louder.
Not from the walls.
From the crypt.
The lid shifted.
Every explorer reached for their weapons.
The stone moved aside, revealing a figure untouched by centuries of darkness.
A man stepped from the crypt wearing the clothing of an ancient noble House. His silver hair fell across his shoulders, and his eyes carried the weight of a thousand years.
But what frightened Sarah was not what he was.
It was that she recognized him.
She had seen his portrait hidden in the restricted archives.
A name that historians believed belonged only to legend.
"Lord Cassian Veylor," she whispered.
The vampire looked at her with surprise.
"You know my name."
Sarah lowered her weapon.
"Your House disappeared three thousand years ago."
Cassian's expression became solemn.
"My House did not disappear."
The chamber fell silent.
"We were erased."
The explorers exchanged uneasy glances.
Cassian explained that the Crimson Veil had once guarded knowledge that could alter the balance of Grimmveil itself. Their enemies had sought that knowledge, and when the House refused to surrender it, they hid themselves away.
But hiding came with a cost.
The world forgot they existed.
The whispers Sarah heard were not the voices of trapped spirits.
They were memories.
The last remaining pieces of a story that someone had tried to bury forever.
"The catacombs called you here because the seal is failing," Cassian said.
Sarah looked toward the ancient markings.
"What seal?"
For the first time, fear appeared in the vampire's eyes.
"The one keeping them from returning."
The ground shook violently.
A crack spread across the chamber floor.
From beneath the stone came a sound that was neither human nor animal.
The whispers changed.
They were no longer desperate.
They were afraid.
Cassian grabbed an ancient manuscript from inside the crypt and placed it in Sarah's hands.
"You must take this to the Grand Archives."
Sarah looked at him.
"What about you?"
The ancient vampire turned toward the darkness approaching through the tunnels.
"I spent centuries waiting for someone to remember us."
His expression hardened.
"Now I must make sure there is still a Grimmveil left to remember."
The chamber collapsed as Sarah and the remaining explorers fled.
When they reached the surface, the city looked exactly as it always had.
The towers still shone.
The streets were still filled with immortal citizens.
The world had no idea that something beneath it had awakened.
Sarah returned to the Grand Archives with the manuscript and began restoring the lost records of the Crimson Veil.
But there was one thing she never explained.
The final page of the manuscript was blank when she first found it.
Three nights later, new words appeared.
A single sentence written in ancient ink.
"The first House has returned."
And beneath that sentence was a list of names.
The names of every explorer who entered the Veilshade Catacombs.
Sarah stared at the final name for a long time.
Because the last name written there was her own.
Deep beneath Grimmveil, the whispers continued.
But now they were no longer calling for someone to find them.
They were announcing that they had been found.
